In a conversation with my wife and business partner we started talking about search engine optimization and marketing and the things that made us successful in getting so many top 10 positions for our customers. We analyzed what we were doing right and what others were doing wrong that businesses should know about. Taking notes during this conversation we ended up with a long list of what a business should ask the company they are considering doing the web design or redesign work for them. We firmly believe that every action we take or lack of

Recently an advertising company called me and wanted to know if I was wanted to be included in a list of "The Top 10 Dependable Web Design Companies". This will go into a magazine that will be distributed by a major airlines. I decline to name this airlines because of obvious reasons but I do believe they are based in the Southwest United States. They didn't check to see if I was dependable or not they just wanted me to advertise. The point of this is to do your homework and see if the company is what they say they are. If they can not get themselves in the top 10 anywhere on the web how do they expect to get you there.
There are so many SEO/SEM companies starting that talk about what to do but not many that can really do the job. That is because there is so much information available that they read an article and think they can do the job for a client. SEO sounds easy and actually is once you have a good idea of what needs to be done. If a company tells you it is all about one thing then you are talking to the wrong SEO company. If they tell you that you need to do something without researching your site and that of the competition then they are not qualified to do the job for you. SEO is a complete package that takes into consideration everything about your site. From the foundation set for the design all the way to marketing it is one thing and they all have to fit together like a well oiled machine. Here at Day Web Design we know everything about your site and that of your competitors before we start and that gives us a huge advantage to help you achieve your goals. Our search engine marketing plans are the best in the industry
One of the first questions I would ask is have they ever had a site banned from the search engines and if so when?. If it was just recently I would run as fast as I could to the next company. Have I ever had a site banned from a search engine? Yes I have and it was my own site. I had been at the top of the search engines for about a year and a small search engine I had never heard of in Europe banned me for illegal linking practices. I was following the exact rules as set by Google, Yahoo, and MSN so I know I wasn't doing anything wrong. I would like to point out that they are no longer in business and I am still at the top of the search engines.
Ask your potential search engine optimization and marketing company if they show pages to the search engines that your visitors can not see? If they answer yes to this one put on the track shoes and look for another company that is doing things right. Hiding pages can get you banned from the search engines in a hurry. This is called "cloaking" and violates the terms of service by all of the major search engines. Another common trick is to show the search engines one type of site while showing your visitors something different. Companies that use practices like this will not be around for long. The search engines are always looking for tricks like this and are very good at finding them.
One thing I tell everyone is to look around. Do not take the first search engine optimization company you find. Do your homework and make sure you find one you can work with and understands your problems. And always make sure that they design for the Americans with Disabilities Act because after all it is a law and is the right thing to do.
There will be a series of articles continuing where this one leaves off so come back again and see if there is anything new on this subject. We made a long list of things to look for and ask your SEO expert.
